Interview with Zeb

Alang from the Digital Point forums conducted a brief but precise Interview from one of the best Graphics and Website's designer Zeb a.k.a Agent47 in the Digital Point Forums and the designer of www.eonte.com, http://www.dirjournal.com/, http://www.web-designers-directory.org/ and http://www.argusvision.net/ etc , Interview is as follows.

1. Could you please tell us brief description about you?

I hold honors degree in Information technology with over 5-6 years of web design/development experience. I was introduced to the internet in mid 2000 and since then I am addicted to this wonderful virtual world. I run a couple of directories and a few websites as a side business. I spend most of my time over the internet and play computer games with friends on weekends.

2. How long you involve in web designing?

I believe that was somewhere in the late 2001 when I stumbled upon a book on Adobe Photoshop 5.5 in my university’s library. I had a quick read of its first few chapters and installed the software included with the book on my PC. I started with photo retouching and creating optical illusions for fun and figured out later that it is not just a photo editing tool but something that I can start my career with.

3. Do you design web directory only?

Not exactly! In fact I have a very limited number of directory design projects under my belt. I’ve designed and developed numerous websites for various international companies. I do print media work, web design projects, e-commerce websites and coding in PHP. TemplatesFactory is my recent web design/development project.

4. What were the challenges in designing web directories?

With basic or intermediate knowledge of XHTML or dreamweaver one can find it easy to code a template. Designing the layout in Photoshop is another story. You need to come up with something that is unique, professional and exactly what your client expects you to deliver and that is the challenging part.

5. What is your first directory design and how many directories that you have designed so far? (provide a list)

As mentioned earlier, I did a limited number of directory designs because of my busy schedule and being selective in picking up clients. SkyBlue Template was my first directory design that I released and distributed for free and was the very first free template for phpLD that got popular among directory owners and is still used by many directories that I am aware of. Peppermint template is also in the list of my popular phpLD templates that was released right after SkyBlue and DomzStyle template. Directory Journal, Eonte Directory, ArgusVision and LinksFactory are some of the custom directories I’ve designed. I also designed and coded DaVinci template that was sold earlier. I don’t know where it is currently uploaded by the buyer but here is a demo.

6. What are your favorite directory design? (One by you and another one by other designer)

Like most of the designers I am a big fan of my own work but that doesn’t prove me the best designer out there. There is still a lot more to learn and is always room for improvement. If I have to pick one of my favorite directory designs then I would choose “Directory Journal” since it was launched with a different idea and unique concept and not to mention, is in safe hands.

My favorite directories that were designed by other designers aren’t many. There are several good directory designers and most of them are good friends but I’ll be honest here. There isn’t a single directory design that can make me say “wow!..!” and it really doesn’t mean that there is a shortage of quality work. I have seen so many directories with good design lately and I see a lot of progress in this area. Marko, Aspidov and other designers have some nice designs in their portfolio and I have a high regard for their work. Gii.in caught my attention because of its clean and uncluttered look. I think I also voted for Edgelevel and Aviva Directory in phpLD site of the month contest.

7. What is your advice for directory owner on how to choose directory designer?

The Directory business is growing fast and we see tons of directories popping up every day. Some of them stay in business and some get vanished. There are many factors involved in the success and quality of a web directory but I will give more value to the design since it represents your identity and is the first impression that counts. I see most of the directory owners ignore this factor. Some may choose a free template that looks exactly the same like hundreds of directories out there. You should always bear in mind that design of your directory must be distinctive and professional that can symbolize your business and do justice with your identity.

Choosing a right designer simply depends on your requirements and budget. Always make sure you know your spending constraints before you begin negotiating with any designer. You can get a template designed and coded for half the price but you don’t get the results you are looking for. When it comes down to making a choice, choose one who can clearly understand your requirements and turn your thoughts into something that can enhance your site credibility and can provide good return on your investment. Paying a little extra for a better solution is worth if it sells. Having a unique and well designed internet image tells your visitor about how much serious you are in your business and will eventually increase the chances of sales. In addition to design, you should also consider the content of directory. Clean formatting of the content, consistent look of the inner pages, site load time, user friendly navigation, SE optimized and valid XHTML code, clear separation of content from site graphics, cross-browser compatibility and accessibility are all important aspects.

P.S: Zeb also designed Alive Directory and DBuzzer General Directory

MySpace Unique resources central

The directory contains listing of MySpace Games, MySpace Resource Sites, MySpace Codes and the learning websites that helps MySpace fans to learn how to edit and customize their MySpace Profile and make it look appealing. Though the directory has a whole list of MySpace categories but it’s missing MySpace Proxy sites, which are listed by the users in Other MySpace Sites category.Hopefully in the next run the directory will have a category for proxy sites with same strong PR it has for other categories.

Where does a Paid Web Directory makes a difference?

Getting known is the ultimate need of any web business; you cannot hold a market until sufficient links direct traffic to you. Though getting listed in free directories can fulfill this need, but where does a specific and paid directory make difference? It’s when you need high PR back links that make you more prominent in Search Engines especially Google when it’s on the go to construct a page rank for you. Targeted traffic is another feature of such directories.

Having a high PR back link makes your website more prominent for Search Engines and gives maximum exposure to your business whether you’re a Web Designer, Hosting Service Provider, Programmer, Flash Designer, Graphic Designer, Website Tools Provider or a Marketing Service Provider. An example of such a directory that can let your business go great guns by targeted traffic is Web Designers’ Directory. It’s a PR6 portal that means getting listed here will not bring you some targeted traffic only but a high pagerank as well.
By getting sorted in accordance with areas of expertise, location, cost effectiveness, popularity and ranking you get 100% targeted customers and that is what you get at Web Designers Directory. Buying links and getting listed in high PR directories works only if you get the right clients and traffic, and the place connecting you with the right clients cannot be other than Web Designers Directory which is ultimately the best General Web Directory in its niche.

Change in Page Strength

My various sites are showing variations in the Page Strength, MySpace Links Directory got a nice Page Strength 4.0, Backed up by a good .edu backlink this directory has been one of the greatest source of my earning currently with a Pagerank of 5.

The Funbie Blog got listed into DMOZ and is also giving a Page Strength of 3.5 although currently its going under good promotion from my end but my neglection in its promotion previously had it fall from a good solid Page Rank 4 to a still very powerful Page Rank 3, the site is expecting atleast a Page Rank 5 in this update.

My Review Blog is also undergoing a good promotion from my end and am expecting a PR 4 for it in this update, although it still got 2-3 strong backlinks in the last PR update but the PageRank for it was not awarded due to the strange behaviour of the Google's algorithm. Currently it has a good Page Strength of 2.5 with 1 PR 7 backlink and a few PR 6 links. Am also trying to acquire a permanent PR 8 backlink but despite the backlink being DO FOLLOW and not as NOFOLLOW, the link wont show in SERP's.

My DBuzzer General Directory will inshallah soon be having a custom design and make over, currently going through a normal promotion but will soon be buying some good links for it to make it worth, installed the DEEP Links module in it for its betterment. Currently PR 2 but closed for submissions due to maintenance this directory is expecting a PR 4 and has a Page Strength of 2.5.

Thats all i had to say!!!

Learning through Video Tutorials

A few days ago, I came across a video tutorial website called Techtorials. Normally, I would not be impressed with a tutorial website since computers come quite naturally to me and there are plenty of tutorials out there, but I actually think video tutorials could be useful for older computer users and young kids. The video tutorials show quite slowly how to perform a single task. Before each screen movement, there are captions explaining what will be happening next. There is no sound except for mouse clicks, but after communicating with the Webmaster, I've learned that voiceover video tutorials will shortly be available. Not all of the video tutorials are basic, a few of the Adobe Acrobat tutorials and Adobe Illustrator tutorials are quite advanced and enlightening. It also seems like there will be Adobe Photoshop video tutorials coming as well. That is something I look forward to.

Go to www.techtorials.com and learn from these useful video tutorials.

Submitting Your Blog to Directories!

Submitting Your Blog to Directories!
The major part of AdSense success lies in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Page Rank your Blog gets, and the main STEP in a Page Rank is the amount of Back links that point to your Blog. These back links can be obtained from many sources but it requires quality content and a quality Blog, if your Blog isn't worth both (like the one you are reading now) try a third option, Submit your Blog to all the major Directories on the World Wide Web.There are plenty of Directories available on the Web that can list your directory for free even without a Reciprocal link but most of them require your blog to fulfill their standards in order to get listed in there directory. For guys like me who own a Blog with an average content that is not well optimized, there are some directories which have High Page rank and accept all submissions if there is a back link placed to there Directory. They are many in number but one of the best among them which I found is :
If you find some other good directories with a high page rank and free submission for all leave a comment here.

Competitive Ad Filter!

Competitive Ad Filter!
Google AdSense provides the functionality to block specific ads from appearing on your pages. Although Google ads are highly targeted to the content of your page, there may be situations in which you don't want to display particular advertisements, for instance you want to get rid of those which pay less and are shown mostly.
A good way to check wether that link will give you a good pay is by manually opening that website in your internet explorer (Remember not to click it yourself) ,and see it ,if its worth calling a REPUTED site with a good WEBSITE and some great stuff, dont filter it,BUT if its just an assembly of one or twp pages ans embedded with text and links just block it.
By doing so it will be a great chance to get new ads with much better rates.
Using the Competitive Ad Filter
  • To edit your competitive ad filter, log in to your AdSense account at https://www.google.com/adsense.
  • Click the Ad Settings or Search Settings tab – there's a separate competitive ad filter for your AdSense for content pages and your AdSense for search pages. A row of links will appear beneath the tabs - click Competitive Ad Filter. This page will display the URLs currently being filtered for your account. If this is the first time you've used your filter, the text box will be empty.
  • Click Edit.
  • Note Down the URL from the ad into your filter list.
  • Click Save Changes to add these sites to your competitive ad filter. It usually takes about 4 hours for your changes to take effect, so you'll continue to see ads for these sites on your pages for a little while.
  • If filtered ads are still appearing after 12 hours, please Contact Google Adsense.

Importance of a PageRank for Blogs!

Importance of a PageRank for Blogs!
So far from the discussions i made at the DP forums i came to knew that a PageRank does mean something to a Blog, but it doesnt mean that if the PageRank of a Blog is nil it is for the fact that it is not read or has traffic coming to it,there are bilions of pages read billions of times a day but are yet to have a PageRank. The main theme is that PageRank is a small part of an ordinary Blog and does means much to a website which deals in buying or selling and from there one can judge the importance of that trading Website in google's eyes. But as ordinary Blogs dont deal in business and are just for the information and personal experiences its not very important to have a PageRank for it,if it has one can consider it as a Bonus.
So concluding all the stuff i would recommend Bloggers to forget about PageRank because it doesnt mean much when its about Blogging, this can really be Helpful and i bet you will save alot of time by not worrying about PageRank of your Blog.

Reasons why ordinary Blogs are behind?

Reasons why ordinary Blogs are behind?
So far we have discussed that a blog is far behind in Adsense business than a real website or portal is, the reason behind this is that blog is like your daily diary covering the half of the main page with its Templates and side bars, and the minimal portion with your posts because off course you have to display the Ads before the posts ;), anyways as I was saying that it’s behind in this business because you notice a website can manage thousands of stuff that may be links, images, banners, ads etc on a very single page that a user sees and its doesn’t make him feel bad to see hundreds of colorful items on a single page that features his own interest. While on the other hand a blog which is generally free hosted like blogspot or wordpress, provide single page that covers all your posts whether they are ten or a thousand and ten, now this require some healthy HTML tricks to get all the stuff side by side, but the point remains the same most blogs cannot mange this. On the other hand Blogs that have there own servers like http://www.seo-dev.co.uk/ are far better than ordinary blogs because they are free of advertisers which host our free blogs and can mange all the design themselves and so put in an ocean of information and content in a small room of there Blog. These according to me are the reasons why ordinary blogs are far behind in business than ordinary websites or owned Blogs.

Preferred Google sites!!!

Preferred Google sites!!!
What i have known for so far there is not a particular type of website that Google prefer over others. You might notice nearly all the websites have different topics in focus but yet they get a lot of traffic, pagerank and off course a good Click rate. The Adsense system works best on pages where Google can work out the meaning of the content. Try sticking to the content of your site.

The most important thing for a good website is to fill out your pages with Quality content and trying using Keywords that are related to your website and
High Paying Keywords too.

I personally prefer a Entertainment Portal over any other form of website because these are the sites which users tend to view a lot and plus in these type of websites a Web designer can add anything from webmasters tips to jokes, chat rooms, songs downloads, news etc Its like the whole world in a room so why bother visiting several pages for different things rather than using the same website to see all the things you need.

The main thing is to gain some search engine rank first because 95% of the traffic comes through search engines and to tell they might be mostly from your area, so do everything that catches there attention and make them visit again and again.

Discuss about Hot topics, update regularly, maximise the number of pages sticking to the quality as well, introduce stuff that will produce you ads that generates heavy revenue and with a high CPC rate. The advertising showing up on your page would tend towards high CPC advertising, and you'll tend to earn more that way.

Blending the Adsense Ads

Blending the Adsense Ads
Many successful Adsense displays have the ads blend perfectly with the background colors on a site. If your background is white it's pretty straight forward but other colors require some work. There is a free tool though that will allow you to match your ads to your background exactly without a lot of wasted time.
Download the free Colorpic application at:http://www.iconico.com/colorpic/index.aspx
Simply point your mouse at the color on your site you want to match and the hex code appears on the top of the colorpic tool ... from there you go to manage palates in your Adsense account and put the exact code in the border and background sections and you have what many refer to as the transparent Google Ad that blends perfectly into your site's overall theme.

Best Placement of Google Ads

Best Placement of Google Ads
From my own experience and many other webmasters Google Adsense returns the best rates of click thrus by placing the Large Rectangle in the upper left side of the page.
The reason for this is that the eye first goes to this point on a web page involuntarily and also that the Adsense Ads blend into the content in such a way as they do not appear to be ads at all but simply part of the page content. If your page gets a lot of return visitors this effect may diminish over time as the same ads may continually appear and your visitors become conscious of the repetition and that they are in fact ads as opposed to actual content.

Attracting Visitors

Attracting Visitors
What i have found out in my minimal research about attracting visitors to your blogs and your website is that most of the websites deals in business, entertainment and they attract the visitors daily cos its their need.Websites that deals with entertainment or other services can make money more faster then some Bloggers because visitors attract the attention of something colorful, interesting, funny stuff, music, jokes, chatrooms, etc etc When they surf the site thoughroly they find Google ads which offcourse are related to waht the content is on that particular page and so they find links to other sites which are of equal rank and same class.
"Try Making your website the way you are a visitor and looking for a site that makes you feel to visit more and more, what is the reason that makes you visit it again and again"
Do you think if someone needs to search for an article wil he be searching in any blog? The answer would simply be no cos Google,Altavista ,etc are already famous for these regards. Now for instance i have a blog on for me! I need visitors that come daily to read my blog and as a gesture of good will give me some hits on the adsense ads and make me earn some revenue, now when it comes to Blog its a bit difficult because Blog readers are very rare they must be very high in number but good blog readers are found very less often. Now the only solution you have got is to have High quality content and a regular update just to attract some visitors to your site. For these purposes i must tell you the greatest link that i have discovered is Problogger.net its an awesome website purely about blogging tricks n tips.

Adsense Optimization

Adsense Optimization
Darren Rowse writes:
"
Increasing Adsense Earnings is a task I get asked to help people with every day.
One of the interesting trends that I’ve noticed in chatting to people wanting advice is that they often come with a fairly single minded approach. The initial request is often one of the following questions:
- ‘Can you help me increase my Click Through Rate?’
- ‘I need to raise my page impressions to help me increase my earnings - can you help?’
- ‘CPM (earnings per 1000 impressions) are too low - can you help me increase them?’
- ‘I want to get higher paying ads on my blog - how do I do that?’
These are all good questions to be thinking about - however I find that post people seem to be obsessed about one of them and quite oblivious to the others. As a result they are only working on one of numerous factors that can increase your Adsense earnings and are possibly ignoring others that could have significant impact on your overall earnings.
The way I like to break it down is into an equation which I’ve previously talked about in Part III of my Adsense Tips for Bloggers Series - the equation is quite simple: (more…) "

Advertising

Advertising
John Cate, vice president and national media director for Carat Interactive, said clients such as TiVo and Pfizer will each be given a three-part blogging “starter kit,” introducing them to the increasingly influential world of blogs.
The kits will instruct each client on how to effectively monitor blogs within their purview, advertise on appropriate blogs, and actually blog themselves. “This practice won’t be right for all of our clients,” said Cate. “We’ll have to access the landscape, and determine who can sustain a dialogue and who can’t."‘

Blog Design

Blog Design

Duncan over at The Blog Herald has a great post on Making your blog sticky which is a second post (first one is here) on what he’s doing at his great blog to make readers stick around after surfing in for the first time to one of his individual archive pages. Its a great article with some useful tips that I’m going to consider playing with.

I am particularly interested in his experimentation with the ‘Recent Posts’ plug in that he’s implemented at the base of each of his posts. I’ve been considering doing that on one of my blogs which has struggled to get people to view more than one page per visit.

In making this move on Blog Herald he now estimates that 60% of his readers now read more than one article on his blog per session in comparison to 10% a month ago. Thats a serious improvement!

Writing Blog content

Writing Blog Content
The average person only comprehends 60% of what they read. How much do you comprehend?.
To ensure your reader ‘gets’ what you’re saying you need to make it clear by using some of the following techniques.
- Use simple language. Avoid technical jargon.
- Don’t introduce too many ideas in one post. You can always add another post later.
- Start your entry with your main point in the first paragraph. Better still, incorporate it in your title. (This can also bring more traffic through search engine referrals)
- Find creative ways to reinforce your main point throughout your post.
- Use visual aids like bold, CAPITALS, italics, underlining, teletext and to emphasize points. Don’t go overboard as you run the risk of frustrating your reader. Also consider changing font size, color and style to draw your readers eyes to your main points.
- Utilize headings, lists and borders to break down the your post into more manageable chunks.
Keep your postings simple and you have more chance of communicating your main message effectively.

Blogging For Dollars$$$!!!

Blogging For Dollars$$$!!!
Will blogging produce millionaires? Can blogging financially provide people with a full time earning capacity? Will we see more and more professional bloggers? Can and should blogs earn money?
An increasing amount of people are writing about making money from Blogging. There is a quite a bit of debate about the legitimacy of doing so.
Megnut wrote an interesting article titled Blogging for Dollars: Giving Rise to the Professional Blogger . She writes:
‘Most financial discussions focus on blog content and explore donations, advertising, or some type of sponsorship/patronage model as the means to compensate bloggers. Very little progress has been made towards finding viable economic models because people still think of Weblogs as personal sites. If you aren’t Andrew Sullivan (who purportedly makes $6,000 per month on his site through donations), it’s hard to imagine how you’d get the traffic and donations to generate such revenue….
By paying great bloggers to produce Weblogs, we remove economic constraints and enable them to devote their energies full-time to producing compelling content and creating outstanding Weblogs.’

What is a Blog?

What is a Blog?
A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger". Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.

Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation
From all i know and what i heard the most important thing to get more traffic and hence good clicks is to optimise your blog and make it Search Engine friendly.SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the most toughest and important thing to drive traffic to your Blog, site etc.
